The earth is made up of three different layers: the crust, the mantle and the core.
Inner Core: The innermost part of Earth is the core and is about 1500 miles (2414 km) thick. Both the inner and outer cores consist primarily of iron and nickel.
The outer core creates the Earth's magnetic field, and the mantle is the source of the Earth's rocks.
The rocks that make up Earth's mantle are mostly silicates—a wide variety of compounds that share a silicon and oxygen structure.
