EMS-Managing natural hazards, Page no 154
What are tropical cyclones:
They are intense circular storms that originate over warm tropical oceans, and have maximum sustained wind speeds exceeding 119 kilometres per hour and heavy rains.
Tropical cyclones are the most predictable of natural hazards. We know when they will form, we can track their
movements and we know what the impacts will be. Here's some strategies that can be used:
Predication for cyclones:
Forecasters use a variety of observational information from satellites and aircraft to determine the current location and intensity of the storm. This information is used along with computer forecast models to predict the future path and intensity of the storm.
Preparations and protection against cyclones:
Cyclone shelters.
Building on stilts so not flooded by storm surge.
Embankments built along coast.
Preserve mangrove swamps to absorb the energy of storm surges.
