Serious Dangers of Swimming Pool Exposure

  • Severe Skin Issues – High chlorine levels can cause chemical burns, allergic reactions, and dry, itchy skin. Poorly maintained pools may harbor bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), leading to serious infections.

  • Respiratory Problems – Inhalation of chlorine fumes can cause lung irritation, asthma attacks, and, in severe cases, chlorine gas poisoning. Long-term exposure in poorly ventilated pools may lead to chronic lung damage or "lifeguard lung."

  • Eye & Ear Damage – Prolonged exposure to chlorinated water can result in chemical conjunctivitis, causing red, swollen eyes and blurred vision. Bacteria in pool water can also cause severe ear infections (swimmer’s ear), leading to pain, hearing loss, or pus discharge.

  • Dangerous Infections – Pools contaminated with Cryptosporidium can cause severe diarrhea that lasts for weeks. Inhalation of infected water droplets may lead to Legionnaires’ disease, a dangerous type of pneumonia. Rarely, unclean pools may contain Naegleria fowleri, the deadly brain-eating amoeba.

  • Toxic & Neurological Effects – Accidental inhalation or ingestion of excessive chlorine can result in dizziness, nausea, and vomiting. Long-term exposure to chlorine byproducts may contribute to nerve damage and cognitive issues.
