What is insomnia and what are its causes

Insomnia is a sleep disorder where a person has trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking up too early and not being able to go back to sleep. It can lead to fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and mood disturbances.

Causes of Insomnia:

  • Stress and Anxiety – Worries about work, relationships, or health can keep the mind active at night.

  • Poor Sleep Habits – Irregular sleep schedules, screen time before bed, or an uncomfortable sleep environment.

  • Medical Conditions – Chronic pain, asthma, acid reflux, or neurological disorders can disrupt sleep.

  • Medications – Some antidepressants, blood pressure drugs, or stimulants can interfere with sleep.

  • Caffeine, Alcohol, and Nicotine – These substances can disrupt sleep patterns.

  • Hormonal Changes – Pregnancy, menopause, or thyroid issues can contribute to insomnia.

  • Sleep Disorders – Conditions like sleep apnea or restless legs syndrome can prevent restful sleep.
