What are chemical reactions? • Chemical reactions are processes in which one or more substances (reactants) are transformed into different substances (products). These transformations involve the breaking and forming of chemical bonds between atoms. Chemical reactions are all around us, from the burning of flames to the digestion of food. What are chemical equations? • Chemical equations are symbolic representations of chemical reactions. They use chemical formulas to represent the reactants and products, and an arrow to show the direction of the reaction. Coefficients are used to balance the equation so that the number of atoms of each element is the same on both sides of the equation. This is necessary because the law of conservation of mass states that matter cannot be created or destroyed in a chemical reaction. Types of chemical reactions: • Combination reactions: In a combination reaction, two or more substances combine to form a single product. For example, the reaction between iron (Fe) and sulfur (S) to form iron sulfide (FeS) is a combination reaction. • Decomposition reactions: In a decomposition reaction, a single substance breaks down into two or more products. For example, the decomposition of water (H2O) into hydrogen (H2) and oxygen (O2) is a decomposition reaction. • Single displacement reactions: In a single displacement reaction, one element replaces another element in a compound. For example, the reaction between copper (Cu) and silver nitrate (AgNO3) to form copper nitrate (Cu(NO3)2) and silver (Ag) is a single displacement reaction. • Double displacement reactions: In a double displacement reaction, two ions from different compounds exchange places. For example, the reaction between sodium chloride (NaCl) and lead nitrate (Pb(NO3)2) to form sodium nitrate (NaNO3) and lead chloride (PbCl2) is a double displacement reaction.
