Ships have always been an important way of transporting people and goods. Today, shipping is less important for moving people because of the advent of the aviation. But there are many types of merchant ship.
Types of merchant ships:
Bulk carriers: The transport of foods such as rice and wheat.
Container ships: The entire load is carried in lorry-sized containers, this is known as containerisation.
Tankers: The transport of fluids, especially oil and petroleum products, liquefied petroleum gas and liquefied petroleum gas and liquefied natural gas. Also used for the transport of vegetables oils and wine.
Refrigerated ships: The transport of perishable items such as vegetables, fruits, fish and dairy products.
Roll-on/Roll-off ships: The transport of vehicles, together with their loads, that can be driven on and off the ship.
Coastal trading vassals: Used for trade between places that are close together, especially in island groups.
Ferries: Used mainly for the movement of foot passengers, sometimes with their cars, mainly between islands or between a mainland and islands.
Cruise ships: Used for pleasure voyages where the facilities on the ship are a crucial part of the trip.
Ocean liner: Used to transport people from one port to another.
