Chapter - 3
Pages - 57-58
2 Types of bonding are there between molecules, one is covalent bond which talks about the sharing of electrons, the seconds one is ionic bond which talks about the bonding between ions and Thats what we are going to be learning about today.
Compounds formed between metal and nonmetal are mostly ionic bonding
Ions And Ionic Bond
When electrons are transferred from one atom to another they become ions which are charged like electrons and protons.
Ionic Bond is a bond where molecules are together by a electrostatic force between opposite charged ions.
Formation Of Ions
Ions are electrically charged particles they form when they gain electrons or when they lost electrons, Thats how ions form.
Example Of Ionic Bonding
Let's take sodium as a example, sodium has a electron configuration of ( 2,8,1 ) the ion of sodium will have a different configuration as it loses the electron from its last shell, electron configuration - ( 2,8 ). These types of molecules are known as cations.
Cations And Anions
Cations And Anions Depend On 2 forces electronegative force and electropositive force
Cations Are types of molecules that have a tendency to give away electrons, these cations give electrons to Anions
Anions are the opposite instead of giving electrons they have a tendency to take electrons from other molecules like cations
Important Features Of Ionic Bonding
Electrons Involved In The Process Of Ionic Bonding Are Mostly In The Outermost Shell Of The Atom.
When Atoms Lose Electrons They Become Positive Ions
When Atoms Gain Electrons They Become Negative Ions
Metal Atoms Lose Their Electrons To Become A Positive Ion
Non-Metal Atoms Gain Electrons To Become Cations
Is there any rule of writing ionic bond's formula?
